Jan Peter Beckmann

Jan Peter Beckmann (born December 25, 1937 in Bielefeld ) is a German philosopher and emeritus professor of philosophy at the Distance University in Hagen .

Career

After graduating from the Bonn-Bad-Godesberger Aloisiuskolleg , Beckmann studied philosophy as well as literature and linguistics at the universities of Bonn , Munich and Stellenbosch / South Africa from 1958 . Following the doctorate to Dr. phil. In 1967 he was Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Yale University from 1968 to 1970 . The habilitation at the University of Bonn (1979) was followed by a call to the FernUniversität Hagen as holder of the newly established 1st chair for philosophy. In the course of his work there, he was Vice Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (1981–1983), Vice Rector for Research and Young Academics (1983–1985) and Managing Director of the newly founded Institute for Philosophy at the FernUniversität (1995–2003). Visiting professorships took him to Oxford University (1983), the University of Bonn (1993 and 1995) and the University of Münster (1995). The Medical Faculty of the University of Essen gave him a lectureship in medical ethics (1997–2011).

Beckmann was a member of the directorates of the Institute for Science and Ethics (1996–2010) and the German Reference Center for Ethics in the Biosciences (DRZE) (1999–2007) at the University of Bonn.

In 2002 Beckmann was appointed by the federal government as an expert in the Central Ethics Commission for Stem Cell Research, of which he is still a member today.

His research focuses on metaphysics , ontology , the philosophy of antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as the philosophical questions and problems of the biosciences, especially medical ethics. Here he has particularly devoted himself to the ethical aspects of stem cell research , organ transplantation and pre-implantation diagnostics (PGD). He advocates PGD under strict conditions and advocates consistent regulations in all areas of reproductive medicine.

Beckmann is co-editor of the series "Practical Philosophy" published by Alber Verlag in Freiburg and the yearbook for science and ethics published by Verlag de Gruyter in Berlin.

Since his retirement (2003) he has continued to teach at the FernUniversität in Hagen.

On December 19, 2014 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. med. Hc) by the medical faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen in recognition of his services in the field of medical ethics .
