Jan Parandowski (born May 11, 1895 in Lemberg , † September 26, 1978 in Warsaw ) was a Polish writer, essayist and literary translator.

Parandowski attended the Jan Długosz Grammar School in Lemberg and studied philosophy, classical philology, archeology and art history at the University of Lemberg from 1913 . Due to the war, he had to interrupt his studies and did not continue to study until 1920, so that he only obtained his master's degree in 1923. Alongside his studies, he worked for Alfred Altenbergs Verlag and wrote for the magazines "Gazeta Poranna", " Tygodnik Ilustrowany ", " Wiadomości Literackie " and "Tęcza". From 1918 to 1924 Parandowski was in a relationship with the writer and journalist Aurelia Wyleżyńska . From 1924 to 1926 he toured Greece , France and Italy. In 1929 he moved to Warsaw, where he was initially editor of the magazine "Pamiętnik Warszawski". In 1930 he became a member of the PEN Club and was director of the club between 1933 and 1978.

1937 received the Złoty Wawrzyn (golden laurel wreath) of the Polish literary academy Polska Akademia Literatury . After the outbreak of World War II, he was active in the conspiratorial cultural life. During the Warsaw Uprising his entire literary archive was burned with all unpublished works. 1945 to 1950 he worked at the Catholic University of Lublin . In 1948 he organized the World Congress of Intellectuals in Wroclaw. In 1962 he became vice-president of the international PEN. In 1964 he signed the so-called Letter 34 (list 34), a protest letter from Antoni Słonimski on the subject of freedom of speech.

Parandowski's literary focus was on ancient culture. His debut took place in 1913 with a literary-philosophical sketch by Rousseau , but his best-known work became Mitologia (mythology), a retelling of classical Greek and Roman mythology that first appeared in 1924.
