Jan Pieter van Bredael
Jan Pieter van Bredael (born July 27, 1683 in Antwerp , † 1735 in Vienna ; also known as Jean Pierre van Bredael or Jan Pieter Bredael II ) was a Flemish painter of battles , hunting, landscape and vedute .
Life
Jan Pieter van Bredael was the son of the almost unknown painter Joris van Bredael (1661–1706), who became a free master of the Guild of St. Luke in 1684 and taught his son painting until his death . At the age of 23, Bredael went to Prague in 1706 and worked there for Prince Eugene of Savoy for years.
In 1720 the artist returned to his hometown Antwerp and joined the Guild of St. Luke. Soon afterwards, Prince Eugene called him back to Vienna, where he died unmarried in 1735.

Bredael was next to Jan van Huchtenburgh (1647–1733) and Ignace Parrocel (1667–1722) another battle painter who was in the patronage of Prince Eugene and was commissioned by him to paint battle paintings of his campaigns, especially against the Turks . Bredael also painted battles from the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), in which the Savoy was not in command, but Guido von Starhemberg (1657–1737). It can therefore be assumed that Prince Eugene was not the artist's only client.
Some of the battle paintings by Jan Pieter van Bredael have survived and are now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum , the Army History Museum and Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.
The artist usually signed his paintings "JPvan: Bredal".
