Jan Slota (2006)

Ján Slota (born September 14, 1953 in Lietavská Lúčka ) is a former Slovak nationalist politician and former member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic . Slota was chairman of the Slovak National Party (1994-1999 and 2003-2012), chairman of the splinter party True Slovak National Party (1999-2003) and long-time mayor of Žilina (1990-2006).

Under his leadership, the Slovak National Party participated in the governments of Prime Ministers Vladimír Mečiar (1994–1998) and Robert Fico (2006–2010).

Life

After 1989 he took part in the founding of the Slovak National Party (SNS). He was chairman of this party between 1994 and 1999.

He was the mayor of Žilina from 1990 to 2006 , being re-elected in 1994, 1998 and 2002.

Because of internal party conflicts, he left the SNS and in 2001 founded a nationalist party called the "True Slovak National Party" (Slovak Pravá Slovenská národná strana ). Neither of the two nationalist parties was able to overcome the 5% threshold in the 2002 parliamentary elections. These election results were the main reason the two parties reunited under the presidency of Slota. In the 2006 elections, Slota's reunited party achieved 11.73% of the vote and was able to move into parliament with 20 seats. After the elections, the Slovak National Party entered a coalition with SMER and ĽS-HZDS . However, Ján Slota himself was not a member of the government. In the parliamentary elections on June 12, 2010 , the SNS was only able to achieve 5.08% of the vote and nine seats. The party was no longer involved in the government. In the early parliamentary elections in 2012 , the SNS narrowly failed to pass the 5% hurdle with 4.6% .

On October 6, 2012, Slota resigned as head of the Slovak National Party, but retained the right to veto political decisions of the party as the party's “honorary chairman” . His successor was the former vice-chairman of the party Andrej Danko . On April 24, 2013, however, Slota was expelled from the SNS due to irregularities in the management of the party's assets during his tenure.

Criticism and scandals

Slota has repeatedly received strong criticism for his attitude (often expressed in a state of alcoholism) towards the Hungarian minority, the Roma minority and towards homosexuals.

For example, when he was drunk, he demanded that the tanks be manned and driven to Budapest in order to "razed the Hungarian capital " . In the 1994 parliamentary elections, Slota's attacks were concentrated on the Magyar minority in the country. The head of the SNS pleaded for a review of the election manifestos of the parties of this minority to see whether they would call into question the "territorial integrity and state sovereignty" of Slovakia. Had that been the case, the Slovak courts should have banned them all. According to Slota, the Magyars were characterized by being "unfortunately civilized by Slavic blood" . Hungarian king Stephan I was in his opinion a "clown on a horse" . On another occasion he called the Hungarian minority living in Slovakia the "cancer in the body of the Slovak nation" .

To solve the "Gypsy problem", Slota suggested the use of whips and referred to this minority as "criminals" , "idiots" , "mentally retarded" and "parasites that must be eliminated" . In a surprising alliance with the Roma Parliament, however, he declared that his party would work with the Roma to improve the situation of the Roma minority. Internationally, Slota caused a sensation when, as mayor of Žilina, he announced in 1996 that he wanted to build a 100 meter high building in the shape of the Slovak national coat of arms. However, as expected, the plan was not implemented.

In 1997, during a meeting in Žilina with the leader of the Serbian Radical Party and alleged war criminal Vojislav Šešelj , Slota signed an agreement on cooperation between the two parties. In Žilina on March 14, 2000, he had a memorial plaque put up for the President of the Slovak State Jozef Tiso, who was convicted as a war criminal and executed in 1947, but who is now venerated by many Slovaks .

According to the documents of the Slovak National Memorial Institute, Slota robbed two village shops in his youth, causing a loss of 22,000 crowns , which was the price of two cars at the time. After this he fled to Vienna, where he was caught by the police in an attempted car theft. Slota then spent two months in custody in Slovakia.

Foreign policy views

Slota criticized the US foreign policy several times . For example, he declared that the Americans had established a "world dictatorship": "They are liquidating entire nations and bombing whoever they want!"

Ján Slota sharply condemned the international military operation in Libya in 2011 because it was not clear who the insurgents were. The international community has attacked Iraq once before, Slota said, because of deception . This should not be allowed in Libya. "The adventurers are not interested in the people or democracy, but only in Libyan oil . "
