Jan de Breet

Jan de Breet , Latinized Adrianus Johannes de Breet (born July 8, 1959 in Oosterbeek ), is a Dutch Indologist.

Life

After graduating from high school in Arnhem , Jan de Breet studied history and biology at Radboud University Nijmegen and Indology at Leiden University . After graduating in 1989, he taught Pali at Leiden University. Jan de Breet is active for Buddhism in the Netherlands. From 1988 to the present (as of 2013) he has been a member of the Presidium of the “Stichting Vrienden van het Boeddhisme”. He also belongs to the Arya Maitreya Mandala founded by Anagarika Govinda .

Scientific work

Jan de Breet was particularly concerned with the Prajnaparamita literature. Since 1997, he translated in collaboration with Robert Janssen , the discourses of Siddhartha Gautama from the Pali canon into Dutch. By 2013 they had submitted ten volumes. For this translation work, Jan de Breet was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Dutch Queen Beatrix in April .

Jan de Breet also translated works by Hans Wolfgang Schumann and Nyanaponika into the Dutch language.
