Jan van de Velde (* 1568 or 1569 in Antwerp ; † September 1623 ) was a Dutch painter and calligrapher .

Life

Jan van de Velde was the son of a nail smith and a relative of Esaias van de Velde . He moved to Delft around 1588 and worked from 1592 to 1620 in Rotterdam as a writing teacher at the Latin school there and then in Haarlem . In addition to working in Latin schools, he also trained scribes in his own institute.

From his marriage to Mayke van Bracht in 1592, the son Jan van de Velde II emerged, who in turn became the father of an artist, Jan van de Velde III .

Van de Velde's main work was the Spieghel der Schrijfkonste , which was published in 1605 , engraved by Simon Frisius . Copies of this book are in a number of European and American university libraries and museums, e. B. in the Metropolitan Museum of Art .
