Jan van de Velde (* 1593 in Rotterdam or Delft ; † 1641 in Enkhuizen ) was a Dutch painter and engraver .

life and work

Jan van de Velde was the son of the well-known calligrapher and teacher Jan van de Velde I , who had moved from Antwerp to northern Holland in 1592 to avoid religious persecution, and a relative of the landscape painter Esaias van de Velde . He grew up in Rotterdam and learned engraving from Jakob Matham in Haarlem . From 1614 he belonged to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. Over the next three years he created over a hundred engravings. This made him one of the most productive Haarlem artists of his time.

Like Esaias van de Velde, Jan van de Velde preferred landscapes as a motif, but also created more than 50 portraits, as well as genre scenes, illustrations for books and paintings. He was influenced, among others, by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn . In addition to his own motifs, in his later days he also processed templates from other artists into engravings.

Van de Velde's works can be found in numerous museums in Europe and the USA.

Jan van de Velde was the father of a son of the same name, the still life painter Jan van de Velde III .
