Jacob Matham, Hercules and Omphale

Jakob Matham (born October 15, 1571 in Haarlem , † January 20, 1631 in Haarlem) was a Dutch engraver , draftsman and copperplate publisher.

Life

Jakob Matham was the stepson and pupil of Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617). He was accepted into the painters' guild in 1600, was doyen (chairman) of the same in 1605 and died in Haarlem on January 20, 1631. He engraved a large number of sheets, some of them from his own drawings, the greater part of Italian, German and Dutch masters. which suffer from the mannered treatment of shapes, but have had a great influence on the development of the engraving technique due to the elegant and delicate guidance of the grave engraving.

His sons Adriaen , Jan and Theodor were also engravers.
