Jan z Příbrami (German: Johann von Pibrans ) (also z Příbramě or Jan Příbram ) (* around 1387 ; † December 20, 1448 ), was a Czech priest ( theologian of the Hussites ) and writer .

Life

In 1408 Jan z Příbrami took part in the gathering of the Bohemian population at Charles University . In 1409 he obtained the academic degree of a Baccalaureus and in 1413 that of a Magister Artium . In 1414 he is one of the witnesses of the declaration of Johannes de Jessenicz ( Jan z Jesenice ) about the opposition of Jan Hus to the accession to the archbishopric. After the death of Hus he appeared as the spokesman for the Prague Masters.

At the meeting of Čáslav in 1421 he was elected together with Jan Želivský as adviser to twenty elected administrators in matters of faith. In November 1421 Jan Želivský managed to have him voted out. At the meeting of the Prague masters and the priests from Tábor in Konopiště in 1423 and in Prague in 1424 he vigorously opposed the Taborites . 1426 he fell out with Petr Payn and described the teaching of John Wyclif for heretical . This was shared by the Prague masters, some of whom feared that the teachings of Jan Hus could also be considered heretical.

Jan z Příbrami was supported mainly politically by Zygmond Korybut . After his expulsion from Bohemia in 1427, Jan z Příbrami was banished from Prague. He then stayed in Žatec , was allowed to return to Prague in 1429 and inclined to the Catholic faith.

In 1424 Jan z Příbrami took the side of the compact and in 1437 complained to the emperor for non-compliance. In 1437 he accompanied the Bohemian ambassadors to Basel . Here he defended the teaching of the Utraquists . In 1439 he was elected administrator of the Bohemian (utraquist) church together with Prokop von Pilsen . However, his efforts were in vain to get the Pope to appoint Jan Rokycana as Archbishop of Prague.
