Procopius of Pilsen
Prokop von Pilsen (Czech Prokop z Plzně ; Latin Procopius de Plzna ; † 1457 ) was a Czech utraquist theologian . He was rector of Charles University several times and from 1439-1448 administrator of the utraquist church.
Life
Prokop studied at Charles University in Prague, where he obtained the academic degree of baccalaureus in 1403 and the master's degree in 1408 . As a supporter of the reformer Jan Hus , he publicly defended the writings of John Wyclif with this in 1410 , which is why he was accused of heresy two years later . He belonged to the moderate wing of the Utraquists and worked closely with Johannes von Přibram .
In 1421 he took part as rector of Charles University in a disputation between the university magisters and the Taborite clergy. Together with Johannes von Přibram, Jakobellus von Mies and Johann von Seelau , he shared the chairmanship of the synod at which the Four Prague Articles were written. In 1433 and 1437 he took part in the Council of Basel with Johannes Příbram as a representative of the conservative Prague clergy .
After the lost battle of Lipan in 1434, Prokop criticized the teaching of the Hussites . Like Johann von Přibram and his followers, Prokop also pursued an agreement between the Utraquists and the Old Church and was prepared to make compromises for this goal.
As a master's degree at the university, he held high offices. 1414 and 1439–1440 he was dean of the artist faculty , in the years 1420–1421, 1426 and 1443–1444 rector of the Charles University. and 1439–1448 administrator of the Utraquist Church. He was succeeded by Jan Rokycana .
