Jang Joon-hwan (born January 18, 1970 in Jeonju , North Jeolla , South Korea ) is a South Korean film director .

Life

He made his directorial debut with the short film 2001 Imagine ( 2001 이매진 ) in 1994 as a graduation film at the Korean Academy of Film Arts . Previously, he graduated from Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in English Language and Literature .

Jang wrote the script for the 1999 film Phantom: The Submarine together with Bong Joon-ho . He became known with his film Save the Green Planet in 2003. The film received positive reviews, screened at numerous film festivals and developed cult status . The film received the Silver George at the 25th Moscow Film Festival and the Golden Raven at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival . Jang won the Blue Dragon Award and the Busan Film Critics Award for Best New Director .

After making two other short films, he released his second feature film in 2013, Hwayi: A Monster Boy . In 2017, his third film was the political thriller 1987 . This is about the democracy movement and the June uprising in 1987 , received positive reviews, numerous awards and attracted 7.2 million visitors to South Korea's cinemas.

Jang has been married to actress Moon So-ri since 2006 . In 2011 she gave birth to a daughter. In 2017, Jang made a cameo in Moon So-ri's film The Running Actress .
