occupation

1987 is a political thriller by South Korean director Jang Joon-hwan from 2017. The film deals with the death of the student activist Park Jong-cheol and the subsequent June uprising , the pro-democracy demonstrations in South Korea , as a result of which the country was democratized. The film opened in South Korean cinemas on December 27, 2017.

action

Park Cheo-won Anti-Communist Investigation Unit tortures student Park Jong-cheol to death. They try to cover up death and state the type of death as a heart attack. But the prosecutor Choi Hwan opposes the cover-up and demands an autopsy . Meanwhile, a journalist learns of the circumstances of death and investigates. Over time, more and more contradictions and details become known and protests ensue. Ultimately, the whole truth comes to light.

background

In 1987 it became known in South Korea that at the beginning of the year the government tortured the student Park Jong-cheol, who campaigned for democracy, to death and tried to cover up the fact. This led to mass protests against the Chun Doo-hwan regime in June . About a year before the film was released in 1987 , there were demonstrations in Gwanghwamun Square between October 2016 and March 2017 against the government of Park Geun-hye due to a corruption scandal . Director Jang Joon-hwan said that with his film he wanted to show that, regardless of whether in 1987 or 2017, the square has always belonged to the people. The demonstrations culminated in the June 29 declaration that allowed the South Korean people to directly elect the president for the first time since 1971 .

It was the second blockbuster of the year to focus on the citizens' struggle for democracy. A Taxi Driver was previously published with Song Kang-ho and Thomas Kretschmann , which deals with the Gwangju uprising and the Gwangju massacre .

The international title bears the addition When the Day Comes ("When the day comes"). This is the English translation of the song title 그 날 이 오면 Geu Nal-i Omyeon , which is played during the credits. The song was released by Moon Seung-hyun in the mid-1980s in memory of Jeon Tae-il , a labor activist who set himself on fire in protest of the labor situation. Park Jong-cheol liked the song.

reception

In 1987, South Korea had more than 7.2 million cinema viewers.

Pierce Conran had very positive reviews of the film, especially the performance of the actress and the directing by Jang Joon-hwan, cameraman Kim Woo-hyung and film editor Yang Jin-mo. James Marsh of the South China Morning Post gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5. The film tries to cover political corruption, police violence , media suppression and a romance all at the same time, but it runs the risk of shedding this central moment in Korean history. According to Maggie Lee, the film shows the snowball effect of a democracy movement, which is why the narrative style is similar to a relay race , in which one protagonist passes the baton to the next. While Lee also praises the camera work and the editing, the second half falls back into a melodrama and the characters come and go without any synergy.
