Jang Sun-woo (born March 20, 1952 in Seoul ) is a South Korean film director . He is considered a provocateur, a bad boy among Korean filmmakers.
Jang studied anthropology at Seoul National University . During his studies he played in a theater group. In 1980 he was arrested for political activity and was imprisoned for six months. He then became a screenwriter. In 1986 he made his first film with a straw man, from 1988 also officially. His non-commercial independent films have won several awards at home and abroad; Sun won Hwa-om-kyung the Alfred Bauer Prize in 1994 at the Berlin Festival. Lies on the basis of a scandal novel, which had brought the author Jang Jung-Il in prison, was the first Korean post in Venice in 13 years.
His most expensive film Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002), however, was a huge flop, the production company Tube Entertainment made so much loss that Tube was taken over by CJ Entertainment to prevent bankruptcy.
