Resurrection of the Little Match Girl ( kor. 성냥 팔 이 소녀 의 재림 , Hanja 성냥 팔 이 少女 의 再 臨 ) is a South Korean feature film by director Jang Sun-woo from 2002. The film was first released in Germany on July 29, 2003 shown as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .
The film is based on motifs from the fairy tale The little girl with the sulfur sticks by Hans Christian Andersen .
action
The shy Su leads a rather bleak existence, works largely unnoticed as a supplier of a Chinese fast food restaurant, and spends his evening free time in a gaming room, where he escapes reality with computer games in a virtual world . Every evening he sees a young, attractive girl whom he secretly adores, but with whom he only meets with disinterest. One day he met a distraught girl on the street from whom he bought a lighter with a telephone number. When he calls the unknown participant, he is presented with the game “The Resurrection of the Girl with the Brimstone” from the manufacturer System , and he is suddenly part of virtual reality.
His job is to protect the taciturn girl with the matchstick from all competitors, then to let her die and to conquer her heart at the moment of her death. In order to achieve the goal of the game, however, countless opponents or fellow players have to be beaten. A happy get-together with the girl beckons the winner. Su faces the task almost unprepared and is fearless witness how the groups fight each other. Soon he also intervenes in the game, briefly allies himself with the female fighter Lala, gradually finds his way around and bravely fights alone against eccentric opponents. Eventually he becomes a hero in cyberspace.
When he violates the rules and illegally discards his ID card, which can be found at any time, the captains try to get rid of the troublemaker in the "system". Nevertheless, Su succeeds in locating the sulfur wood girl with the help of the inventor of the system, a certain HWLF broker. At first everything seems to be in the best order, but then the gameplay gets out of control. The good brimstone girl takes her fate into her own hands, flees from Su, runs amok and kills uninvolved people, so that the system tries to restore the old order by force of arms. After a long struggle, the brimstone girl proves to be extremely adept at handling firearms, the system soldiers finally manage to catch and reprogram them.
Meanwhile, Su armed himself with a new kind of super weapon and set off to free the female target in the headquarters. After numerous skirmishes, he arrives in the building, where he finds a rapidly changing virtual world. He fights his way to the system core, but comes too late because his sulfur wood girl has been reprogrammed and can no longer recognize him. At this point the film offers two different ways of how the film can end.
Alternative endings
In the first version, Su ends up in reality again and pursues his old bleak life as a driver.
In the second version, Su hands the girl her lighter in the system core and reveals his love to her. The two are then separated until they independently resort to automatic weapons and pull down the system soldiers. In this situation, the girl is fatally injured while she is thinking of Su, so that the goal of the game is fulfilled and both can live happily ever after in another unspecified place. In the last shots of the film you can see a small child at her side who apparently belongs to them.

Reviews
“South Korea's most expensive film to date was based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and presents itself as a mixture of different styles, with the melancholy core of the story disappearing behind shrill and fast-paced effects. Narrative moments and stringency are sacrificed to an exaggerated willingness to use violence. "
