Janice Jakait (* 1977 in Lengefeld ) is a German extreme athlete, author and former IT consultant. She was the first German to cross the Atlantic in a rowboat alone and without an escort boat . Exactly 90 days after its start on November 23, 2011 in Portimão , Portugal , it reached its destination in Barbados on February 21, 2012 after about 6500 kilometers .

Row for silence

Janice Jakait rowed under the Row for silence project , working with the OceanCare organization. The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of the issue of underwater noise , which has a dramatic impact on many marine life, especially marine mammals and fish . As announced in a radio broadcast on Hessischer Rundfunk in April 2012 , she is planning further projects: the crossing of the Pacific and Indian Oceans .

The Bifröst

Jakait's boat, the Bifröst (swaying heavenly road from Germanic mythology ), measures approx. Seven meters in length and two meters in width. It was constructed in 2007 from glass and carbon fiber composites. It has an empty weight of 275 kg. The takeoff weight when crossing the Atlantic was approx. 1080 kg, of which about 250 kg was food.
