Janice Scroggins

Janice Scroggins (born 1955 in Idabel , Oklahoma , † May 27, 2014 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American blues and jazz pianist who was active in the Oregon music scene.

Live and act

From the age of three, Janice Scroggins received piano lessons from her mother and grandmother, who were both church organists; the latter shaped her stride piano- oriented style. She attended the African American Booker T. Washington School. She was musically influenced by gospel musicians such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Brother Joe May. She later lived in Oakland before moving to Portland with her daughter Arietta in 1978. There she worked a. a. with the singers Linda Hornbuckle and Thara Memory. In 1987 the album Janice Scroggins Plays Scott Joplin (Flying Heart) was created, which was for the Grammy Awardwas nominated. In the field of jazz, she was involved in eight recording sessions between 1987 and 2008. a. with Eddie Harris and Akbar DePriest . In 2013 she was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame ; At the beginning of 2014 her second and last album Piano Love was released . She had her last major appearance in early 2014 at the Portland Jazz Festival. She died of a heart attack in May 2014 while teaching at Portland Community College.
