Jannie Loots

Jan "Jannie" Loots (born June 4, 1914 in Prieska , Cape Province , South African Union ; † 1998 ) was a South African lawyer and politician of the National Party (NP), who among other things was minister of various departments and between 1976 and 1981 spokesman for the Chamber of Deputies (Volksraad van Suid-Afrika) was.

Life

After attending school in Prieska, Jan "Jannie" Loots began an undergraduate degree at the University of Stellenbosch , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a law degree with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He had to give up his career as a lawyer because of an illness, whereupon he settled as a farmer in Swemkuil near his hometown Prieska. At the request of Theophilus E. Dönges , the then finance minister and chairman of the National Party (NP) in the Cape Province , he ran for the NP in the election on October 8, 1961. In this election he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Volksraad van Suid -Africa) and represented the constituency of Queenstown . At the beginning of his membership in parliament he dealt with financial and agricultural policy issues and was temporarily chairman of the committee for public accounts. On August 30, 1968, he took over his first government office and was Vice Minister for Finance and Vice Minister for Economics in the Vorster I cabinet until April 22, 1970.

In the Vorster II cabinet formed by Prime Minister Balthazar Johannes Vorster on May 18, 1970 , he took over the office of Minister for Planning and Statistics and held this office until April 29, 1974. At the same time, he served from May 18, 1970 until he was replaced by Schalk van der Merwe as Minister for Coloreds Affairs and Homeland Rehoboth Affairs on July 31, 1972 . Furthermore, he became the first environment minister in 1973 and also held this office until April 29, 1974. On April 29, 1974, he continued to take over the post of Minister for Environment, Planning and Statistics in the Vorster III cabinet and held this position until January 23, 1976, when Schalk van der Merwe succeeded him again. As planning minister, he was particularly committed to improving living conditions in the villages.

On January 26, 1976, Jannie Loots succeeded Alwyn Schlebusch as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and held this position as President of Parliament until his replacement by JP du Toit on July 30, 1981.
