Jardin botanique Roger-Van den Hende
The Jardin botanique Roger-Van den Hende is a botanical garden in the Canadian city of Québec . It is located in the Arrondissement of Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge , on the campus of the Université Laval . The six hectare botanical garden was opened in 1966 and has around 4,000 different species.
history
The idea of creating the garden goes back to the Belgian biology professor Roger Van den Hende. In 1963 he suggested to the then rector Rolland Poirier that a school garden for ornamental plants be laid out, which would be looked after by the agricultural faculty. With modest financial means, Van den Hende began building up the collection and setting up a tree nursery in 1965 . The teaching garden was opened in 1966 and was located on the edge of the new university campus, on an area previously used for agriculture. When Van den Hende retired in 1975, the university named the garden after him. In 1974 the Linnaeus Society of Québec built an information pavilion, and four years later the garden was opened to the public. It was officially designated as a botanical garden in 2006.

The garden is open daily from the beginning of May to the end of October, and entry is free. Around 50,000 visitors are counted every year. Around 4000 species and cultivars grow , with a focus on the province of Québec , but also from the rest of America, Europe and Asia. The plants are arranged according to their families . There is a water garden, an arboretum , a herbarium , a rhododendron collection, a rosarium and an exhibition of annual plants .
