Jaromil Jireš (born December 10, 1935 in Bratislava , † October 24, 2001 in Prague ) was a Czech director and screenwriter who was often associated with the Czechoslovak New Wave .

life and career

In the 1960s, Jireš was often confronted with censors who restricted his work. His film The Scream (Křik) was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964 . The scream has often been referred to as the first Czechoslovak New Wave film . This movement is known for its dark humor, attitudes towards non-professional actors and "art-cinema realism".

Another successful film by Jireš is Žert . This is an adaptation of the novel The Joke by Milan Kundera . Žert tells the story of Ludvik Jahn, a man who was expelled from the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia for making an inappropriate joke on his girlfriend. As an adolescent, the man wanted revenge for it. The film was produced during the political liberalization movement during the Prague Spring and contained many scenes criticizing the communist leadership. The film was released after the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops . It was successful in the cinemas but was quickly banned from the same by the Communist Party. Amos Vogel wrote that the film was probably the biggest and most harrowing accusation of totalitarianism from a communist country.

Valerie - A Week of Miracles , set in the early 19th century and based on a novel by Vítězslav Nezval . The film was released in 1970. It is a Gothic style film that deals with the menstruation and sexual awakening of a 13 year old girl. Jireš Film Mladý muž a bílá velryba was shown at the eleventhMoscow International Film Festival .

After the Soviet Union to Czechoslovakia occupied, Jireš continued his work in the country continued, although less controversial. In 1971 he was the director of the film My Love to the Swallows , which was about a Czech resistance fighter in World War II. His film Incomplete Darkness was shown at the 33rd International Film Festival in Berlin. In the 80s and 90s Jireš made other films, including ballet and opera documentaries for television.
