The Swedish steam locomotive type E (II) was a locomotive for heavy passenger and freight traffic in northern Sweden and for heavy goods traffic in southern Sweden.

history

Between 1907 and 1920, 130 class E (II) steam locomotives were delivered to Statens Järnvägar . Production took place in the large Swedish locomotive factories Nydqvist och Holm , Motala Verkstad , Nya AB Atlas and Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun . It was the first SJ locomotive series with inner cylinders.

With the increase in traffic and route lengths in the north, replacements for the K (I) and L (II) series locomotives , which were used for these services up to that point, were required. The axle pressure of the T (III) series delivered in 1899 was too high for the railway lines in the north of the country. This is why the E (II) series was developed. With its four driving axles and no trailing axle, the entire weight could be placed on the drive wheels. The axle pressure of the locomotive was 12.5 tons per axle. The two cylinders are inside the frame, the boiler was built with a superheater. The locomotives received a three-axle tender on delivery.

Right from the start, all locomotives had closed cabs. They were equipped with the three-axle type L tender. In the last few years of operation, some of them received type A bogie tenders.

E (II) 1217 was experimentally equipped with a peat fire on delivery .

OKB E series

14 locomotives were sold to the private Ostkustbanan in 1925/1926 ( E (II) 951, 1044, 1192, 1327, 1330, 1331, 1457, 1332, 982, 1182, 1463, 1335 ). The locomotives were given the numbers E 2 to E 12 and E 23 at OKB in this order . With the nationalization of OKB, these locomotives returned to SJ in 1933 with their old numbers before the general nationalization of the railways in Sweden in 1939 .

SSJ E series

E (II) 955 was sold to Skåne – Smålands Järnväg in 1937 as E 16 . It returned to the SJ in 1940 and was given its previous company number.

UVHJ E series

E (II) 1239 was sold to Uddevalla – Vänersborg – Herrljunga Järnväg (UWHJ) in 1936 and was given the company number UVHJ 20 . In 1940 she came back to the SJ and got her former company number back.

Series KJ E

KJ E 16

In 1917 Kalmar nya järnvägsaktiebolag (KJ) purchased three locomotives similar to the E (II) series from Motala Verkstad . These locomotives were a little heavier than the SJ's machines and equipped with a different tender.

Two of them with the numbers E 15 and E 16 were used by Kalmar Järnvägar . After the nationalization of the KJ in 1940, they were given the numbers E (II) 1535 and E (II) 1536 in 1942 .

SäNJ E series

The third locomotive procured by KJ was delivered in 1919 to Sävsjöström – Nässjö Järnväg (SäNJ), which it took over in 1914 . It was given the company number E 106 and was used on the railway line between Nybro in Kalmar län and Sävsjöström in Kronobergs län . After the nationalization of the KJ in 1940, the locomotive was given the number E (II) 1537 in 1942 . Another renovation increased the coal supply to 5.5 tons and the water supply to 18 m³.

Series SJ E2

SJ E2 No. 979

Between 1935 and 1951, 90 locomotives were fitted with a leading axle ( E (II) 903–906, 909, 933–936, 948–951, 954–957, 979–985, 987–988, 1040, 1044, 1046–1047 , 1071-1072, 1086, 1091-1097, 1099-1101, 1105, 1119-1125, 1127-1128, 1151-1152, 1154-1155, 1179-1180, 1182-1187, 1190-1194, 1196, 1217, 1238 , 1240-1242, 1326, 1329, 1331, 1333-1335, 1454-1457, 1459, 1461-1463 ). These locomotives were given the new series designation E2 , but kept their previous number. The boiler was later moved in the frame. These measures were taken in order to improve the maximum speed. The conversion increased this from 65 to 70 km / h.

Several locomotives were equipped with a four-axle tender to increase the range of the locomotives.

Series SJ E5

Due to the higher axle pressure , the three locomotives taken over by KJ in 1940 were given the new type designation E5 in 1943. They kept their company numbers 1535–1537 . The machines were shut down in the 1950s. E5 1535 was parked in 1960 as a standby locomotive until 1970 and scrapped in Vislanda in 1972. E5 1536 was scrapped in 1971 and E5 1537 in 1967.

Use and whereabouts

Due to their low axle load, the locomotives, in contrast to many other modern machines, remained in service for a long time on secondary lines and in shunting service until the end of the steam locomotive service in Sweden. The last copies of the E and E2 series were taken out of service in 1972. As the last active SJ locomotive, E2 1194 ran a special train for Svenska Järnvägsklubben on March 31, 1972.

In the last epoch of steam locomotives in Sweden, a larger number of them were taken over as standby locomotives in the standby reserve ( Swedish beredskapsreserv ): E (II) 901, 908 and 937 as well as E2 904, 1040, 1105 and 1184 . In addition, E2 1072 is said to have belonged to these reserve locomotives. This reserve was dissolved in 1990. The last parked locomotives were salvaged by railroad enthusiasts until 2016. The salvage from Sandträsk (2008) and the last one from Litsnäset (2016) became known nationwide .

A large number of the locomotives can be found in museums and museum railways.

IBAB E (II) / E2

Inlandsbanan AB took over a number of steam locomotives from both series after they were taken out of service at SJ. These were from the original series E (II) 952 and 1098 . The latter was also with the wrong number 1092 . IBAB acquired: E2 905, 957, 1093, 1127, 1182 and 1194 of the converted locomotives. E2 957 washanded overto the Ånglokets Vänner museum railwayaround 2005 together with E2 1127 . E2 1127 is now a monument locomotive in Vilhelmina , E2 957 is used by Arvidsjaurs Järnvägsförening . In2014, 1182 (EVN: 9074 0001 182-7) and 1194 (EVN: 9074 0001 194-2) were still availablefrom the E (II) .
