biography

Ricci grew up in Portland, Maine. At 14, his musical career began as a singer in punk bands. Jason Ricci also wanted to learn an instrument, his band members persuaded him to learn the harmonica. It was his mother who drove him to play and explore this little instrument better and better. He had always enjoyed listening to the blues alongside other styles of music and so he became more and more a fan of this music. The blues made him move to Memphis , Tennessee . There he met David Malone Kimbrough, the son of Junior Kimbrough , played in the bands of father and son and he also played with RL Burnside . The darkest period of his life so far also falls during this time in Memphis / TN. He got caught up in drugs and was imprisoned for a year.

In 1999 he won the Mars National Harmonica Contest and in the same year he appeared in Keith Brown's band and recorded an album with him. In 2000 Adam Gussow Harmonica Player named him one of the top 10 harp players of all time for Satan and Adam in Blues Access magazine. Besides Jason Ricci, there was only one other living harmonica player: Charlie Musselwhite . After spending time with Keith Brown, he played for 15 months in Big Al & The Heavyweights and lived in Raleigh, North Carolina before founding his first band, Jason Ricci & New Blood , in 2002 . A member of this band was Shawn Starski who was voted one of the Top Ten Hottest New Guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine in 2008 .

In 2007 they signed a contract with Eclecto Groove. a side label from Delta Groove Productions . In October 2007 her first album Rocket No. Nine and in 2009 the second album Done with the Devil . Both albums cemented the reputation of this band as an "extraordinary" new band and so it is understandable that they were named blues band of the year by Wax magazine for three years in a row. In 2008 Jason Ricci won the Blues Critics Award for Best Harmonica Player. In 2009 he was nominated for the Blues Award for Best Harmonica Player and in 2010 he won this award. In 2015 he was nominated again for the Blues Award.

Officially, the band New Blood never broke up, but from 2010 they went their separate ways.

Until 2015 Jason Ricci hired himself as a studio musician for u. a. Nick Curran , Ana Popović , Walter Trout , Cedric Burnside , Nick Moss and the Jay Willie Blues Band. 2015 he played harmonica on the album Step Back from Johnny Winter and won the Grammy Award for Best Blues Album .

In the same year he formed his new band Jason Ricci & The Bad Kind with members of the band of John Lisi & Delta Funk. In April 2015 he was seen on national TV when he played the song Born in Chicago with Zac Brown and Tom Morello to introduce the Paul Butterfield Blues Band to the Rock'N'Roll Hall Of Fame.

With his new band The Bad Kind, Jason Ricci is back on tour around the world, playing at festivals and in clubs. You can visit his channel on youtube to learn harmonica.
