Jay Barney

Jay B. Barney is Professor of Strategic Management at the Fisher College of Business of Ohio State University . The American gained international fame as the founder of the resource theory and the interpretation of a company's core competencies .

Career

Barney graduated from Brigham Young University in Utah where he acquired in 1975 in the subject Sociology the Bachelor . In 1978 he completed a master's degree from Yale University , which he also received in 1982 in sociology and public administration. From 1980 to 1986 he taught management at the University of California, Los Angeles , and from 1986 to 1994 at Texas A&M University . He has been with Ohio State University since 1994 . The University of Lund in Sweden awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1997 and the Sun-Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, an honorary professor title in 2005.

Jay Barney gained particular importance in 1986 with his article Strategic Factor Markets: Expectations, Luck, and Business Strategy in the journal Management Science, (Vol. 32, No. 10, 1986, pp. 1231-1241), with which he developed resource theory has justified. In 1991, Firm Resources and Sustained Competitive Advantage followed (in: Journal of Management, Vol. 17, No. 1, pp. 99-120). Both articles are among the most influential and widely cited works in the field of strategic management.

In addition to his teaching and research activities, Jay Barney works as a management consultant for numerous companies. He received several honors, including in 2001 the nomination as a Fellow of the Academy of Management .
