Gerald Jay Sussman

Gerald Jay Sussman (born August 9, 1947 ) is an American computer scientist.

Sussman studied mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a bachelor's degree in 1968, but had been active in research on artificial intelligence there since the mid-1960s . In 1973 he did his doctorate with Marvin Minsky and Seymour Papert (A Computational Model of Skill Acquisition). Today he is the Panasonic Professor of Electrical Engineering there .

In 1975 he and his student Guy L. Steele developed the Lisp dialect scheme , which he made freely available to the general public at an early stage (under GNU license). He was also otherwise active in the founding phase of the Free Software Foundation in the 1980s (with Richard Stallman ).

Sussman and his students also developed applications of artificial intelligence in CAD for the design of VLSI chips. With Steele he developed special scheme chips in the late 1970s, especially for the execution of commands in the Scheme language, and in 1988 he also designed and built chips for high-precision calculations in celestial mechanics (digital orrery ). With Jack Wisdom , he investigated evidence of chaotic dynamics in the solar system, especially in Pluto's orbit . Also with Wisdom he built the “Supercomputer Toolkit” for calculating the solutions of ordinary differential equations, the successor to the Digital Orrery. In 1992 they confirmed indications of chaotic behavior in long-term simulations of the solar system, which Jacques Laskar found in 1989.

Sussman is also known for the textbook Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs , along with Hal Abelson . He also wrote a book Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics with Jack Wisdom and Meinhard Mayer on Classical Mechanics (with a special focus on numerical algorithms), which, like his software textbook, uses Scheme Code. In 1990 he received the Karl Karlstrom Outstanding Education Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for his textbook .

Sussman is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , the New York Academy of Sciences , the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of IEEE and ACM.
