The Jbel Tazekka , sometimes also Jbel Tazzeka , near the city of Taza in Morocco is at 1980 m the highest mountain on the northeast tip of the Middle Atlas . When the view is clear, the summit of the densely forested mountain region offers an impressive panorama of the mountains of the Middle Atlas to the south.
location
The distance from Fès is about 120 km (driving distance) in an easterly direction; from the northeastern city of Taza it is only about 36 km.
National park
As early as 1950, the French colonial rulers at the time established the Tazekka National Park, which was initially around 680 hectares in size, in order to protect the flora and fauna of the region. In the course of time the area of the park - despite some villages located here - was enlarged to 13,737 hectares. Due to the increase in area, the Gouffre du Friouato stalactite cave , the only one in North Africa, has become part of the national park.
- flora
The atlas cedar is a characteristic but rare tree of the region . Various oak and pine species also grow ; and juniper - and yew bushes are found.
- fauna
When the park was founded, the leopards , hyenas and caracals that probably still lived here in isolation at the beginning of the 20th century were extinct. Today there are wild boars , atlas squirrels , various bird and bird of prey species and, since 1994, a dozen Berber deer - imported from Tunisia - that were exterminated here about 300 years ago.
tourism
The national park is often visited by Moroccan families because of its dense forest cover and the resulting cooler climate. There are several hiking trails in its area, some of which are also used by European mountain bikers.
