Jean-Adolphe Beaucé (born August 2, 1818 in Paris , † July 13, 1875 in Boulogne-sur-Mer ) was a French painter and printmaker .

life and work

Beaucé received his artistic training in the studio of the painter Charles-Louis Bazin . He then specialized in military representations in the style of Horace Vernet . In 1839 he made his debut with the battle painting La bataille de Toulouse, 10 avril 1814 in the Salon de Paris , where he exhibited regularly in the following years. On behalf of the government, he repeatedly accompanied the French army on their campaigns and created official depictions of military events.

In Algeria he took motifs for the pictures Prize de la Smala d'Abd-el-Kader par SAR le Mgr le duc d'Aumale (Salon from 1844) and La Charge du colonel Morris à la bataille d'Isly (Salon from 1853) . He depicted the Crimean War in the painting Le général Conrobert reconnaissant les travaux des Russes devant Sébastopol (Salon of 1861) and the French intervention in Lebanon found its visual implementation in Le Debarquement des troupes français en Syrie, à Beyrouth . A little later, Beaucé accompanied the troops to Italy, where he chose the Battle of Solferino as a motif (painting La Bataille de Solferino in the Salon of 1861).

In addition, the artist accompanied the army across the Atlantic in order to find further picture ideas as part of the French intervention in Mexico . After this trip, pictures such as Le Campement du 3e zouaves à San Jacinto and L'Entrée du sorps expéditionnaire français à Mexico, le 10 juin 1865, emerged . During the Franco-Prussian War he was trapped along with the French Army of the Rhine during the siege of Metz .

In addition to his painterly work, Beaucé created numerous drawings for woodcuts, which were mainly used to illustrate books. These include Jean Bart et Louis XIV by Eugène Sue , Des Quarante-cinq by Alexandre Dumas the Elder , Histoire de Napoléon I by Laurent de l'Ardèche and works by Victor Hugo .
