Jean-Chrysostome Kapumba Akenda

Jean-Chrysostome Kapumba Akenda (born January 1, 1953 in Kianga, Congo ) is a Congolese philosopher and Catholic theologian.

Life

Akenda studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Mayidi / Democratic Republic of the Congo and at the Gregoriana in Rome from 1975 to 1981 .

From 1981 to 1985 he worked as a teacher of French, mathematics and philosophy at the seminar in Kinzambi / Congo. On August 15, 1982, he was ordained a priest in the diocese of Kikwit / Congo .

From 1985 he continued his studies in Marburg / Lahn and Düsseldorf, where he received his doctorate in 1990 with a thesis on the diversity and objectivity of cultural forms under Ernst Cassirer . In this context, under the direction of Oswald Schwemmer in Berlin, he participated in the development of theories in cultural studies.

From 1990 to 1996 Akenda was visiting professor of philosophy of science at the Catholic faculties of Kinshasa . As a professor of philosophy of natural sciences, metaphysics and the history of science, he taught in Sankt Augustin at the Philosophikum in Kalonda. For five years he also served as president there.

He submitted his habilitation thesis in 2003 on the subject of cultural identity and intercultural communication in connection with the question of ethical universalism in the age of globalization . At the University of Bremen in the summer semester of 2004 he took part as a lecturer in the lectures on cultural philosophy and the seminars on African philosophy. Since then he has been a private lecturer at the University of Bremen.

Akenda has been a professor of philosophy ( metaphysics , epistemology of the natural and cultural sciences, general epistemology) at the Catholic faculties of Kinshasa since 1996 , from which the Catholic University of Congo (UCC) emerged in July 2009. From 2000 to 2009 he also worked there as administrative secretary general. He is visiting professor for philosophy of science and metaphysics at the University of Marien Ngouabi Brazzaville and in Gabon at the Omar Bongo University in Libreville . He participates in scientific teaching in Kimwenza and Kisangani .

Akenda is Director of the Regional Center for Fundamental Studies and Epistemology (CRECEM-Africa) at the University of Kikwit (UNIKIK), which became known nationwide in December 2010 through an international symposium on the scientific challenges for Africa. As director of CRECEM, he maintains academic cooperation with other universities in Africa (e.g. in Cameroon and Burkina Faso ), the West Indies University in Barbados in the Caribbean and the Edgar Morin Center for Complexity of Thought (“de la Pensée Complexe “) in Paris.

Since 1998 he has been visiting charitable partners in Germany on a regular basis, where he is given financial aid for Congolese students. As part of the Africa project of the Catholic parish Maria Frieden in Berlin, he directs the support of needy students in the Congo.
