Jean-François Chalgrin

Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin (* 1739 in Paris ; † January 21, 1811 there ) was a French architect . It is to be assigned to classicism ( French : Neoclassicisme).

Life

Chalgrin was awarded the Prix ​​de Rome in 1758 and lived in Rome from November 1759 to May 1763 as a student of Giovanni Servandoni . He was in the favor of the Duke of Choiseul and the Count of Saint-Florentin and in 1775 became the first architect and building manager of the Count of Provence , the younger brother of Louis XVI. appointed.

In 1764 he drafted the plans for his most successful work, the church of Saint-Philippe-du-Roule (1774–1784).

After the gable of the Church of St-Sulpice de Paris was struck by lightning, he was commissioned to restore the facade in 1777 . He replaced the damaged gable with the existing balustrade, built the northern facade tower (1777–1780) and created the monumental organ case inside the church.

After the French Revolution he was commissioned to convert the Palais du Luxembourg into the seat of the Directory .

In 1806 Napoléon I commissioned him to build the triumphal arch of the Place de l'Étoile in honor of his Grande Armée , for which the architect designed the plans.

Jean-François Chalgrin died shortly after the construction of the triumphal arch on January 21, 1811 in Paris.

In 1776 he married Marguerite Émilie Vernet, daughter of the painter Claude Joseph Vernet , who gave birth to a daughter named Louise-Josèphe Chalgrin (1777-1794).
