Jean-François de Chamillart (also: Chamillard ) (* 1657 in Paris ; † April 15, 1714 ibid) was a French bishop and member of the Académie française .

life and work

Jean-François Chamillart was the younger brother of the Finance and War Minister Michel Chamillart . He embarked on a spiritual career and was awarded a doctorate in theology at the Sorbonne . From 1687 he was commendatory of the Abbey Fontgombault , from 1702 the Abbey Saint-Pierre in Baume-les-Messieurs . In 1692 he was appointed bishop of Dol (in Dol-de-Bretagne ) by the king , with which the title of count was connected. In 1702 he moved to the Senlis diocese . At the same time he was elected to the Académie française (seat No. 18) because of the eloquence of his court sermons . His long acceptance speech, in which he makes it unmistakably clear that as Bishop of Senlis he has no energies free for the academy, is the only literary testimony he left behind. At court he was the first almsman of Maria Adelaide of Savoy . He died at the age of 57 and was buried in Senlis Cathedral.
