Jean-Marie Ghuysen
Jean-Marie Ghuysen (born January 26, 1925 in Blégny - Trembleur , † August 31, 2004 in Liège ) was a Belgian microbiologist .
Ghuysen was able to explain the mode of action of the β-lactam antibiotics , which inhibit the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. He described the peptidoglycan layer there and the biochemistry of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBP, now known as transpeptidases ).
Life
Ghuysen's father was a pharmacist and mayor in Blégny - Trembleur . Jean-Marie Ghuysen studied pharmacology and chemistry at the University of Liège . During the war he supported the Resistance as a messenger and bomb maker. In 1947 he obtained a degree in pharmacology, in 1948 in chemistry and in 1951 a Ph.D. from Victor Desreux. in physical chemistry . Ghuysen then got a job at Labaz , but in 1958 he moved to the University of Liège, where he received an extraordinary professorship in 1966 and a full professorship in 1969. In 1990 Ghuysen retired , but was still in charge of the protein engineering center there until 1995 .
Ghuysen was married, his wife Jeanine (née Defourny, 1925–2003) died a year before him. The couple had three children.
