Jean-Marie Rouart
Jean-Marie Rouart (born April 8, 1943 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French author and journalist . He has been a member of the Académie française since 1997 .
Life
Jean-Marie Rouart was born into a family of artists: his father was the painter Augustin Rouart (1907–1997) and his great-grandfathers the artists Henri Rouart and Henry Lerolle . After completing his baccalaureate at a private school in Paris and studying literature and philosophy, he worked briefly for the magazine littéraire in 1967 and then as a reporter for Le Figaro until 1975 . When Robert Hersant took over the newspaper in 1975, he resigned.
From 1977 he wrote leading articles for the Quotidien de Paris whose editor-in-chief he became in 1979 and whose literary pages he was responsible for until he left in 1985. In 1985 he returned to Figaro and from 1986 to 1988 was the editor in charge of the literature supplement, then head of the “Literature” section. In 1996 he became the first managing director of the Figaro editorial company . In 2003 Angelo Rinaldi ousted him from the top of Figaro littéraire . Rouart increasingly worked for Paris Match .
In 1995 he became a member of the jury of the Prix de l'écrit intime . On December 18, 1997, Rouart was elected to the Académie française and received the 26th armchair as the successor to Georges Duby .
Rouart caused a sensation with his book Omar: la construction d'un coupable ( Omar: Construction of a Guilty Party , 1994), in which he shed light on the background to the “Raddad Trial”. Gardener Omar Raddad had been accused of murdering millionaire widow Ghislaine Marchal and was convicted in a contentious process. Rouart was convinced of the Moroccan innocence and accused the family, who struggled legally. Rouart was sentenced to a fine and damages for defamation.
In 2012, as President of the La Forêt des livres festival, he accepted the Prix de l'Œuvre for the festival.
