Jean-Paul Riopelle

Jean-Paul Riopelle (born October 7, 1923 in Montreal , † March 12, 2002 in L'Isle-aux-Grues ) was a Canadian painter and sculptor from the Francophone Canadians . He was an internationally recognized representative of action painting .

Life

Riopelle studied at the Montreal Art Academy . In the late 1940s he moved to Paris , where he met leading artists of action painting , surrealism , automatism , tachism and informel , who influenced his artistic development.

From 1945 Riopelle belonged to the artist group "Les Automatistes". In 1956 he met the painter Joan Mitchell , who became his partner. The relationship lasted until 1979. Jean-Paul Riopelle was a participant in documenta II (1959) and documenta III in 1964 in Kassel .

Riopelle's pupil and assistant was Michel Vermeulen , who from 1990 to 1994 worked in his workshop on the monumental work Hommage à Rosa Luxembourg, among other things .

Jean-Paul Riopelle died in L'Isle-aux-Grues near Québec in 2002 .
