Jean-Pierre Guillaume Catteau-Calleville (* 1759 in Angermünde ; † May 18, 1819 in Paris ) was a Franco-German historian and geographer in the French service.

Life

Catteau-Calleville's family came to Prussia in 1685 after the Edict of Fontainebleau and, like other Huguenots , settled there due to the Edict of Potsdam . He himself became a French Reformed preacher in Stockholm in 1783. He later resigned from his position there and from then on lived as a geographic author and travel writer in Paris. He became known for his extensive geographical descriptions of the Baltic Sea region. The project of the extended north canal from Paris to Lübeck , which was started by French surveyors in 1813 during the French era, was a clear sign of the future importance of the Baltic Sea area already at the time of the continental barrier. Fundamental to this was the study by Catteau-Calleville, published in 1812, across the Baltic Sea from Lübeck to the port of Arkhangelsk . The idea of combining the three Hanseatic cities of Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck by adding Sachsen-Lauenburg and the Land Hadeln to a separate Hanseatic territorial state in the Rhine Confederation was rejected due to this overarching consideration. He also presented the biographies of Renée de France and Kristina von Sweden .
