Jean-Pierre Luminet (born June 3, 1951 in Cavaillon ) is a French astronomer and astrophysicist and writer . He is Research Director of the CNRS at the Paris-Meudon Observatory and there at the Laboratoire Univers et Théories (LUTH).

Luminet pioneered the computation of gravitational lensing effects of black holes in 1979 and in 1982 studied with Brandon Carter the destruction of stars by tidal forces near supermassive black holes with the derivation of signatures confirmed by the Chandra and XMM X-ray satellites in 2004 . Since the 1990s, he has been concerned with the topology of the universe and methods for drawing conclusions about it from CMB data. He worked with Marc Lachièze-Rey , Jeffrey Weeks , Jean-Philippe Uzan and others. In 2003 he hit with Weeks, Uzan u. a. in this context a dodecahedron topology from WMAP data (based on the model of Henri Poincaré ).

He is the author of many popular science books, including the history of cosmology. He also wrote novels and poems.

In 1999 he received the Prix Georges Lemaître and in 2006 the Prix Paul Doistau-Émile Blutet de l'Information Scientifique . The asteroid 5523 Luminet is named after him.
