Jean-René Ladmiral (born May 1, 1942 in Lisieux , in the Calvados department , France ) is a French German studies specialist, translator , translation scholar and philosopher.

Life

Jean-René Ladmiral spent his school days at the Lycée Henri IV . After studying from 1962 to 1965 and teaching at the University of Heidelberg and the Sorbonne in Paris, Jean-René Ladmiral devoted himself to research in the field of psychosociology of communication. To do this, he examined bilingual groups (German-French). In 1968 Jean-René Ladmiral began his work as a professor at the University of Paris-Nanterre for German philosophy . In 1987 he founded the university-affiliated CERT, a research center for translation. In 1972 he introduced a new discipline at the university: translation studies . He teaches German philosophy, philosophical German and leads courses in translation and translation studies at the Institut de Management et Communication Interculturels (ISIT Paris). In 1974 Jean-René Ladmiral received his doctorate on the subject of “Jürgen Habermas. Quatre essais sur la raison, la pratique et la technique: traduction et commentaire ».

In 1995 he obtained his habilitation on the subject of “La traductologie: de la linguistique à la philosophie”. In March 2010, Jean-René Ladmiral was awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa by the Western University of Timişoara (Romania) for his extraordinary scientific achievements . In June 2010 a colloquium was held in honor of Jean-René Ladmiral with the title "Jean-René Ladmiral: une oeuvre en mouvement". Previously, based on an interview between the Institute for Translators and Interpreters in Beirut (ETIB) and Ladmiral, a book entitled "Jean-René Ladmiral, le dernier des archéotraductosaures interviewé par l'ETIB" was published.

Focus of his work

The work of Jean-René Ladmiral is considered to be interdisciplinary. They include topics from translation studies, the development of translation studies and translation processes, as well as philosophical content, which often has a clear reference to the areas of study in translation. Due to his philosophical training, Jean-René Ladmiral himself translated mainly the works of German philosophers such as Jürgen Habermas , Immanuel Kant or Friedrich Nietzsche into French (see translations).
