Jean-Robert Smeets

Jean-Robert Smeets (born February 20, 1916 in Maastricht ; † November 2, 2003 in Mheer, Margraten ) was a Dutch Romanist and Medievalist .

life and work

Smeets studied in Groningen (with Kornelis Sneyders de Vogel ), Paris and Besançon. From 1941 he was a high school teacher in Maastricht and Groningen , and also a lecturer at the Horticultural School. In 1953 he received his doctorate from the University of Groningen with an edition of La Chevalerie de Judas Macabé (Assen 1955) and was there lecturer in Old French , Old Spanish and Vulgar Latin . Louis Kukenheim brought him to the University of Leiden in 1960 , where he taught as a professor until 1980. He founded the “Equipe de Leyde” to research the medieval Bibles.

Smeets was Chevalier of the Legion of Honor (1983).
