Louis Kukenheim

Louis Kukenheim (born September 22, 1905 in Amsterdam , † April 18, 1972 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Romanist .

Life

Kukenheim came from a Jewish family. His parents were Ephraim Kukenheim (born August 4, 1863 in Amsterdam; † December 31, 1942 in Westerbork) and his wife Esther Koopal (born July 22, 1870 in Amsterdam; † January 26, 1945 in Auschwitz). He attended high school in Amsterdam, where he received his diploma in 1923. In 1924 he passed his A examination in French, in 1925 his state examination B and in 1926 his state examination A. In 1928 he passed the candidate examination for Romance language and literature at the University of Amsterdam , passed his doctoral examination cum laude in 1930 and received his doctorate in 1932 with the thesis Contributions à l'histoire de la grammaire italienne, espagnole et française à l'époque de la Renaissance with Jean Jacques Salverda de Grave (born March 19, 1863 in Noordwijk-Binnen, † March 22, 1947 in The Hague). In 1938 Kukenheim passed his doctoral examination in classical languages, with a focus on Latin. He began his professional career in 1930 as a teacher in Haarlem , Amsterdam, Rotterdam and in 1932 at the Murmellius Gymnasium in Alkmaar. During the Second World War, he lectured for a year at the Jewish Higher Civic School in Amsterdam and stayed in Leiden for three years to avoid persecution of the Jews.

Then he worked again in Alkmaar. On June 23, 1951 he was appointed to the professorship of Romance literature and philosophy at the University of Leiden , which task he took up on September 28 with the speech Euphonie, Logique, Clarté, drie mythen van de Franse spraakkunst . Kukenheim was also rector of the alma mater in the 1968/69 academy year , for which reason he gave the rector 's speech Grammatica-linguïstiek-techniek - een drievoudig snoer wordt niet haast on the 394th anniversary of the Leiden University on February 7, 1969 (Ecclesiastes 4:12 ) held. Kukenheim married in 1945 with Lucy Marie Gorter (born September 21, 1905 in Paris; † January 19, 1992 in Leiden), the daughter of Evert Gorter (born February 19, 1881 in Utrecht; † February 17, 1954 in Leiden) and his first wife Jeannette Elisabeth Keijser (also Keyser * September 19, 1879 in Amsterdam; † June 27, 1965). The sons Eduard Everet Kukenheim (born February 12, 1947; † August 27, 2012 in Amsterdam) and Willem Samuel Kukenheim (born February 1, 1949 in Alkmaar) came from the marriage.
