Jean Étienne Benoît Duprat

Jean Étienne Benoît Duprat (born March 21, 1752 in Avignon , † July 6, 1809 in Wagram ) was a French général de brigade and revolutionary .

career

In 1791 he was at the side of his younger brother and Girondist Jean Duprat (executed on October 30, 1793) and the notorious Jourdan "Coupe-tête" at the atrocities of the Massacre de la Glacière (October 16 and 17, 1791) in Avignon involved.

More moderate than his brother, he rose to colonel in the National Guard and in 1795 was Adjudant-General of the Armée d'Italie .

On December 19, 1791 he gave a public address to the "Patriotic Circle of Marseille" ( Cercle patriotique de Marseille ) about the revolution and the current situation of Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin .

On July 6, 1809 he fell as a general in the battle of Wagram .

Jean Étienne Benoît Duprat, like his brother Jean, comes from a large Avignon family that got rich mainly through the silk trade and as the owner of the Avignon Sparkasse.

During the French Revolution , part of the Papal Palace in Avignon was converted into a barracks and assigned to the pioneers. Between 1881 and 1900 it was named "Caserne Duprat".

His name is engraved in the triumphal arch of Paris on the eastern pillar in column 19, line 2.
