Jean Adair (born June 13, 1873 in Hamilton , Ontario as Violet McNaughton , † May 11, 1953 in New York City ) was a Canadian actress .

life and career

Jean Adair attended drama school in Chicago , after which she traveled with acting troupes through America for many years and was also seen in vaudeville shows. Adair made her Broadway debut in 1922 with the lead role in the comedy It's a Boy . By the year she died, the character actress had appeared in over 25 Broadway plays, mostly in maternal or eccentric roles. Today she is best known for her portrayal of the elderly, lovable murderess Martha Brewster in Joseph Kesselring's piece of arsenic and lace , which was a great success on Broadway between January 1941 and June 1944.

In Frank Capra's version of the film, Arsenic and Lace , she played this role again alongside Cary Grant . The film version, although produced in 1941, was not premiered until 1944 due to its great success on Broadway. Apart from arsenic and lace , however, she only made four other films: Advice to the Lovelorn (1933), Love at Second Sight (1947), Something in the Wind (1947) and City Without a Mask (1948). Otherwise, her career has mainly focused on the theater. Shortly before her death, Adair made a few guest appearances on television and played the role of Rebecca Nurse in the world premiere of Arthur Miller's drama Witch Hunt . She died in New York a month before her 80th birthday.
