Jean Alexander Heinrich Clapier de Colongue , Russian Iwan Petrowitsch (de) Kolong ( Russian Иван Петрович Колонг , scientific transliteration Ivan Petrovič Kolong ; * February 22nd July / 6th March 1839 greg. In Dünaburg ; † May 13th July / May 26. 1901 greg. in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian scholar of navigation and major General of the Russian army .
Life
Jean Alexander Heinrich Clapier de came from the Baltic noble family of the Clapier de Colongue .
He is one of the founders of the theory of deviation of the magnetic compass . Clapier de Colongue invented the deflector named after him in 1875 . In addition, he developed guidelines for the compensation of ship compasses, which found international recognition. Clapier de Colongue was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
