Life

Jean Antoine Dours was the fourth of five sons of a former army officer. He attended high schools in Pau and Laval . In 1843 he became a surgeon at the military hospital in Lille . In 1845 he moved to Paris , and the following year after passing the entrance exam he became an assistant surgeon in Algeria . After arriving in Algeria, he began to explore the flora. He also observed the insects that were on the plants. In 1848 he had to return to France because he could not stand the Algerian climate. He worked in Perpignan and Rennes , where in 1849 he obtained the diploma of a bachelier ès-sciences physiques . In 1850 he was able to return to Algeria, where he wrote his dissertation in 1851 . Then, during a year-long assignment in remote Pontéba , he resumed his nature studies. Through his brother, who was the principal of the college in Saint-Sever at the time , he came into contact with the naturalist Léon Dufour . A lively exchange about Hymenoptera developed; Dours regularly sent animals to Dufour. In 1853 Dours was appointed assistant major, 2nd class, and transferred to Péronne . In 1854 he was released from military service at his own request and married. In 1857 he moved to Amiens. In 1870 he took part in the Franco-Prussian War as a doctor and was wounded in the Battle of Dury .
