life and career

In the 19th century, Gudin was considered an important painter who specialized early on in large-scale romantic and naturalistic marine and seascapes . He studied with Anne-Louis Girodet and Antoine-Jean Gros at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1838 he was commissioned by the French government to write a large cycle depicting the successes of the French navy.

During his long life he filled many European collections and galleries. He is represented in almost all European national galleries, especially in Paris, London, Moscow and since 1845 also in the Berlin National Gallery. Even more than his colossal paintings, Gudin's oil studies, watercolors and graphics attract constant attention.

His daughter Henriette Herminie Louise Gudin (1825–1876) also became a marine painter.
