Jean Croiset SJ (born August 28, 1656 in Marseille , France ; † January 31, 1738 , Avignon ) was a French Catholic priest , Jesuit, author of ascetic writings and early disseminator of the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

Life

Jean Croiset entered the Society of Jesus in Avignon on February 16, 1677 and was ordained a priest in 1690 . On February 2, 1693, he made his solemn vows. He taught theology in Marseille and was rector of various colleges, as well as novice master and provincial .

He achieved ecclesiastical historical importance as the successor to Claude de la Colombière as the soul guide of St. Margareta Maria Alacoque for his pioneering commitment to spreading the veneration of the Sacred Heart in the spirit of the apparitions of Paray-le-Monial . In particular, his book La dévotion au Sacré Coeur de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ (The Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus) was well received and was quickly published several times; the 1694 edition came on the index because it contained an unapproved office .

Jean Croiset died of rotting at the age of 82 .

Quotes

  • "The special object of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the infinite love of the Son of God, which moved him to go to death for us and to give himself entirely to us in the Sacrament of the Most Holy Altar, which is expressed through the foresight of all ingratitude and all dishonor which he was to experience in this state of a sacrifice until the end of time, was not deterred by this miracle, and which moved him to rather expose himself to the abuse and misery of men on a daily basis than to renounce to show through the greatest of all miracles how much he loves us.
