Jean Daniel Cadinot initially pursued a career as a photographer . The first nudes appeared with portraits of the writer Yves Navarre and the singer Patrick Juvet . He began to distribute pornographic photos. In 1978 he started making films.

Cadinot made dozen of 16mm films at his French Art production company . Right from the start, these films placed great emphasis on the situation and costume. Sometimes there is a closed plot. Numerous gay fantasies are implemented: Sex in the monastery boarding school, the reformatory or on a scout tour, cruising in Paris, sex in the Venetian carnival, etc., rape fantasies are also common. Most of the performers are very young (18-25). In addition to the strikingly spontaneous sexuality of the scenes, which were not shot with muscular models in high-gloss film style, Cadinot's style was also characterized by humor and irony , which is particularly evident in the music used, which sometimes ironically comments on the sex.

His best-known film is Harem (1984), which is set in a Maghreb bazaar and in which the main actor has sex with numerous Arabic-speaking bazaar vendors, a supposed realism that caused a sensation, especially in the USA. In addition to the actors who were mostly newly cast, there were occasional guest stars like Daniel Brown or Jens Hammer .

With the switch to video in the 1990s, Cadinot's films became less distinctive and much more conventional. Since around 2000 he has tried to revive the typical Cadinot style with remakes of classic themes from his early films, which in addition to the erotic and often artistic demands. Cadinot died in April 2008 at the age of 64 of complications from a heart attack.
