Jean Defraigne

Jean Pierre Marie Olivier Germain Defraigne (born April 19, 1929 in Roosendaal en Nispen , North Brabant , Netherlands ; † March 15, 2016 ) was a Belgian politician of the Parti Réformateur Libéral (PRL) , who was not only a minister but also twice president of the Chamber of Deputies was.

biography

After attending school, he studied law at the University of Liege and was after the promotion to Doctor of Law as a lawyer worked and later became alderman of Liege .

In 1965 he was elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the first time as a candidate for the PRL and was a member of it until 1974. During this time he was from January 1973 to April 1974 in the government of Prime Minister Edmond Leburton, Secretary of State for Regional Economics to the Minister for Economic Affairs, Willy Claes .

After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, he was a member of the Senate between 1974 and 1977 . In April 1974, Prime Minister Leo Tindemans also appointed him Minister for Public Works. He held this ministerial office until 1976.

In 1977 Defraigne was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies and stayed there until 1989. Between May 20, 1980 and October 24, 1980 he was President of the Chamber of Deputies for the first time. He held this office again from December 18, 1981 to January 19, 1988.

On December 2, 1983, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for his political services . In 1989 he was elected member of the 3rd European Parliament , to which he was a member until 1994.
