Jean Geoffroy (painter)
Jean-Jules-Henri Geoffroy (born March 1, 1853 in Marennes (Charente-Maritime) , † December 15, 1924 in Paris ) was a French genre painter and illustrator .
Born as the son of the tailor Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy and Rosalie geb. Dickinson, Jean Gueffroy became a student of Léon Bonnat and Adam Levasseur.
Since 1874, Jean Geoffroy has shown his works at the Salon de Paris and the Salon des artistes français, of which he became a member in 1883. In the same year he received an honorable mention there, in 1886 a third class medal at the same salon and a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1885 .
Jean Geoffroy mainly painted genre scenes with children at school or in family circles.
Around 1876 he met the author and publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel , who hired him as an illustrator for children's and youth literature. Since 1880 he signed his works with the pseudonym "Geo".
