Jean Howard Hagstrum

Jean H. Hagstrum (born March 25, 1913 in Saint Paul , Minnesota , † November 5, 1995 in Tucson , Arizona ) was John C. Shaffer Professor of English at Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois .

Live and act

Hagstrum taught at Northwestern University from 1941 to 1981. He was a respected lecturer in 18th century literature and romanticism. During his 40 years at Northwestern University, he was a co-founder of the residential college system. He was chairman of the English department. He headed the publication of the "Community of Scholars" report and organized one of the first alumni colloquia on the subject of "Sex and Sensuality." Hagstrum published much work in the field of eighteenth century literature and romanticism. He dealt primarily with the relationship between poetry and painting. His approach was not only historical but also psychological.

He was the author of several books, including "enlivened by Desire: The Couple from Homer to Shakespeare," earning him the Aldo Scaglione Prize for Excellence (Distinguished Achievement) of the Modern Language Association brought. He was a guest of honor at the 1995 American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies meeting.

Hagsturm was married and had two daughters, Katherine Hagstrum and Phyllis Meshulam.

Honors

Hagsturm was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1974. In 1990 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Northwestern University's English faculty has named the reception room in the auditorium's library the "Hagstrum Room" in his honor.
