Jean Joseph Guieu

Jean Joseph Guieu , rarely Jean Guyeux (born September 30, 1758 in Champcella , † October 5, 1817 in Châteauroux ) was a French general de division of the artillery .

Life

At the age of sixteen, Guieu joined the royal army as a cadet in 1774 . He was soon able to distinguish himself through courage and bravery and was also promoted several times. In 1791 he served with the rank of captain in the Alpine Army and on October 4, 1793 he was promoted to colonel . As such, he joined General Charles Pierre François Augereau for two years and fought in the Pyrenees .

Under the leadership of Jacques François Dugommier , Guieu fought in the Battle of Boulou (April 29 / May 1, 1794) and in the Battle of Sierra Negra (November 17/20, 1794). When the war between France and Spain ended in the Peace of Basel (July 22, 1795), Guieu was able to return to France.

When Napoleon was planning his Italian campaign in 1796 , Guieu volunteered. He came under the command of General Jean Sérurier and fought at Mondovi (April 20-22, 1796), Lonato (August 3-4, 1796), Rovereto (September 4, 1796) and Arcole (November 15-17 1796). During the siege of Mantua a . a. together with Pierre François Sauret under Napoleon's leadership.

After the Battle of Novi (August 25, 1799), Guieu returned to France. In the following years, Guieu only took on administrative tasks in the military administration. In 1803 he was officially retired and he settled in Châteauroux. He died five days after his 59th birthday on October 5, 1817, and found his final resting place there.
