Jean Rottner (born January 28, 1967 in Mulhouse ) is a French politician ( Les Républicains ). He was Mayor of Mulhouse from 2010 to 2017 and has been President of the Grand Est Regional Council since October 2017 .

Political career

Jean Rottner completed a medical degree at the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg. From 1997 he practiced as an emergency doctor at the Center Hospitalier de Mulhouse , from 2005 to 2009 he headed the medical emergency center SAMU -SMUR. Since 2017 he has been President of the Association of Hospitals in the Mulhouse-South Alsace Region ( Groupe hospitalier de la région de Mulhouse et Sud Alsace , GHRMSA). He has been working as an emergency doctor again on a part-time basis since October 2019.

Rottner was initially a member of the bourgeois center party UDF , in 2002 he switched to the center-right collecting party Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP). In the local elections in 2008, he was elected to the municipal council of Mulhouse on the common list of center-right parties and appointed 1st deputy to the mayor Jean-Marie Bockel . From 2010 to 2014, Rotter was Vice President of the Mulhouse Alsace Agglomération municipal association , responsible for housing.

After Bockel's resignation in May 2010, Rotter succeeded him as Mayor of Mulhouse. In his UMP party, he served as the national secretary for emergency medicine and rescue services from 2011 to 2014. In the local elections in March 2014, Rotter - supported by UMP, UDI and MoDem - was re-elected as mayor with 45.8% (against 36.7% for his socialist opponent Pierre Freyburger). In addition, from 2014 to 2017 he was 2nd Vice President of Mulhouse Alsace Agglomération, responsible for spatial planning and economic development. The UMP was renamed Les Républicains in May 2015 .

In the regional elections in December 2015 in the new Grand Est region (fusion of Alsace , Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne ), Rotter was the top candidate in the center-right list of Les Républicains, UDI and MoDem in the Haut-Rhin department . He was elected to the regional council, where he took over the office of vice-president (under Philippe Richert as president), responsible for competitiveness and digital. In addition, Rottner was parliamentary group chairman of the Majorité régionale (parliamentary group of LR, UDI and MoDem in the regional council). After Richard's withdrawal in October 2017, Rottner succeeded him as President of the Regional Council. He handed over the mayor's office in Mulhouse to his previous deputy Michèle Lutz , and in return, Rottner became the first deputy mayor.

The east of France has been more affected by the corona pandemic than most other regions in Europe since February 2020 . Rottner's fame in France and other countries has increased as a result.
