Philippe Richert (born May 22, 1953 in Ingwiller , Département Bas-Rhin ) is a French politician of the Les Républicains party . Since May 26, 2010 he has been President of the Regional Council of the Alsace Region . Since the reorganization of the regions on January 1, 2016, he continued this office in the Grand Est region until September 30, 2017. Then he withdrew from politics.

Richert is the son of a working-class family from the small village of Wimmenau in the Vosges . After studying at the Université Strasbourg I Louis Pasteur , he taught from 1974 as a teacher at a collège natural sciences ( sciences de la vie et de la terre ) and finally became deputy headmaster of the collège in La Wantzenau .

Richert has been politically active since 1982, when he was first elected to the General Council ( conseil général ) of the Bas-Rhin department for the local movement Initiatives alsaciennes . In 1985 he became a member of the Union pour la démocratie française party and a member of the Regional Council of Alsace ( Conseil régional de l'Alsace ). From 1998 to 2008 he was President of the General Council for Bas-Rhin. 1992–2004 and 2005–2010 he represented the Bas-Rhin department in the French Senate . In 2002, like many other members of the UDF, he joined the newly founded UMP , which changed its name to Les Républicains in 2015 . From November 2010 to May 2012 he was Minister Associate Minister for Local Authorities ( ministre chargé des collectivités territoriales ) in the government of François Fillon . In politics, Richard's main focus is on environmental protection, and he is also strongly committed to the preservation of cultural heritage.
