Jean Senebier

Jean Senebier (born May 25, 1742 in Geneva , † July 22, 1809 ibid) was a Geneva Reformed pastor, naturalist and bibliographer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Seneb. ".

Life

Senebier studied theology and in 1765 became a pastor in his hometown. In 1769 he took over a pastor's position in Chancy and in 1773 became the chief librarian of the city of Geneva. The revolution in Geneva caused him to withdraw to the Vaud , he returned to Geneva in 1799.

Senebier justified his reputation as a natural scientist with the classic price publication on scientific observations (1769), the third edition of which appeared as Essai sur l'art d'observer et de faire des expériences (Geneva 1802, 3 vols.). After that he mainly dealt with the physiology of plants and initiated significant progress here by emphasizing the principle that nutritional processes must be judged according to the general laws of chemistry.

For the Encyclopédie méthodique , Senebier worked on plant physiology. He also wrote a Histoire littéraire de Genève (Geneva 1786, 3 vol.) And translated several works by Lazzaro Spallanzani .
